About the Role
The Staff AI Product Builder role at Brightwheel centers on developing AI-enhanced features to streamline workflows in early education settings, such as preschools and childcare centers. This senior-level position requires a full-stack engineer who is deeply integrated with AI technologies to address real-world challenges, from prototyping solutions to scaling production systems. The role emphasizes creating secure, reusable AI components that boost efficiency for educators and administrators while aligning with the company’s mission to elevate early childhood education outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement cross-cutting AI services, including retrieval mechanisms, context management, evaluation tools, and safety guardrails, to support areas like classroom operations, billing, and family engagement.
- Lead the full product development cycle for AI initiatives, from gathering customer insights and defining metrics to prototyping, iterating, and deploying scalable solutions.
- Develop shared abstractions and tooling for AI integration, such as standardized prompt patterns, monitoring systems, and reusable components, to enable consistent engineering practices across teams.
- Architect data systems that securely integrate signals from products, billing, support, and operations, enabling AI to provide proactive recommendations rather than just reporting past events.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on AI-augmented development practices, using tools like coding assistants to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards for quality and security.
- Validate AI hypotheses through customer interactions, prototypes, and metrics to ensure features deliver tangible benefits, such as time savings or improved user satisfaction in early education environments.
- Contribute to platform-level improvements by building reusable services and patterns that enhance the overall AI ecosystem within the company’s technology stack.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of production systems from initial design through iteration and launch.
- Demonstrated success in delivering AI-powered products using large language models (LLMs), with expertise in prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and production evaluation.
- Strong full-stack capabilities, including backend development in modern frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Python, or Node.js, alongside relational databases and data modeling for large datasets.
- Proficiency in frontend technologies, preferably React or similar component-based frameworks, with a platform-oriented approach to creating reusable services and APIs.
- Solid computer science foundations in data structures, algorithms, and systems design, combined with a security-conscious mindset for handling sensitive data in education and family contexts.
- AI-native proficiency, leveraging tools like coding assistants and orchestration frameworks to build efficiently, while thoughtfully addressing limitations such as hallucinations and safety concerns.
Compensation & Benefits
- Remote work flexibility, with a distributed team spanning all US time zones and select international offices, supporting work-life balance in a collaborative environment.
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion, fostering an equitable workplace where all qualified candidates receive fair consideration regardless of background.
- Access to cutting-edge technology stacks, including Ruby on Rails, React, PostgreSQL, AWS services, and AI tools like AWS Bedrock, to drive innovative projects.
- Opportunities for professional growth through mentorship, leadership in AI practices, and contributions to a high-impact mission in the $175 billion early education industry.
