DeSantis wants America to be aware that he is young, has small children,

Ron DeSantis is a bit of an oddity these days among top-tier presidential contenders. He was born in a time when computers were widely used in American homes, after the Vietnam War, and he still has young children of his own rather than a large enough number of grandchildren to field a basketball team.
If elected, DeSantis would be 46 on inauguration day, making him the youngest leader since John F. Kennedy. Although he doesn’t mention it directly, his campaign aims to make sure voters understand it.
The governor of Florida, who maintains a full schedule of morning and evening activities, repeatedly mentions possessing the “energy and discipline” required for the White House. He frequently discusses his young children, ages 6, 5, and 3, who have joined their parents on the campaign trail with his wife Casey DeSantis. DeSantis, one of the few candidates with children still living at home, frequently brings up his parents’ concerns about the media and pop culture as he pushes his right-wing social agenda.

He joked that tax relief on diapers, one of parenthood’s most startling expenses, had come too late for his family, albeit not by much when he signed the state budget on Thursday.

The obvious intention is to stand in stark contrast to his main challengers, former President Donald Trump, who just turned 77, and Vice President Joe Biden, both grandfathers with sons (Hunter and Don Jr.) older than DeSantis. Voters are worried about the age and health of both men, particularly Biden.
According to a recent national poll by Quinnipiac University, over two-thirds of registered voters think Biden is too old to effectively serve another four-year term as president. Only 36% of those who were registered to vote agreed with that statement about Trump, indicating that DeSantis’ relative youth might work to his benefit in the general election rather than the primary.
DeSantis, 44, doesn’t often address his age, and the party he represents is older and more white than the country as a whole. As a result, the party hasn’t a reputation for choosing young presidential nominees who ride a wave of enthusiasm to the White House, as Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama did.
DeSantis has fallen out of favor with many people in his generation due to his hardline stances on topics like abortion, climate change, and how race is taught, among other things. The majority of people in his age group support the Black Lives Matter movement, believe that climate change is a very serious issue, and want abortion to be allowed in all or most circumstances. According to a Quinnipiac poll, only around 1 in 4 voters between the ages of 35 and 49 have a favorable opinion of DeSantis.
DeSantis also doesn’t appear to have Obama’s natural talent for igniting youth enthusiasm. The 44th president, who was the final major contender to run on a platform of generational change, was able to rely on the backing of young, powerful cultural figures, especially hip-hop artists.
DeSantis hardly addresses cultural influences like television shows, films, music, or social media except for raging against “wokeness.” When the livestream frequently crashed, one of his attempts to engage younger audiences—announcing his campaign on Twitter alongside Elon Musk—went wrong. A DeSantis tribute song set to the tune of “Sweet Home Alabama” is added to the generic mix of country and vintage rock on his rally soundtrack. He rarely discusses his love of golf or other pastimes. His wife frequently provokes his comments about parenthood.
However, his three children, Madison, Mason, and Mamie, are well known. Visitors report that the governor’s residence in Tallahassee, Florida, frequently has neat stacks of toys arranged on the front porch, including baseball bats and a pail of baseballs.
Since the Kennedys, no presidential family has raised children as young as the DeSantis clan, raising dreams for a Republican Camelot in the White House. Casey DeSantis in particular seemed to be leaning on the similarity. Her sometimes-favored white gloves and exquisite outfits have been compared to Jacqueline Kennedy’s wardrobe.
Some Democrats in Florida have changed their minds about Ron DeSantis because of the couple’s emphasis on family. “I don’t like him as a politician,” said Janie Jackson, 52, a Democrat from Miami who owns a housekeeping company, in an interview this past week. But I believe he is a decent husband and father.
Trump, who has five children with three different women and has been divorced twice, could be particularly open to these comparisons.
Republican strategist Dave Carney, who is headquartered in New Hampshire, said of DeSantis that talking to his family “helps humanise him.” He’s a father. To that, people may relate. It lends him authority to discuss family matters.
Voters, however, have a keen sense of humor, said Carney. He answered, “There’s a balance.” You don’t want your kids to come off like a prop, she said.
There is evidence that younger Republicans are reacting to DeSantis. The governor had his best level of support from Republicans and Republican-leaning voters aged 18 to 29, according to a recent poll by The Economist and YouGov, but he still lagged behind Trump 39% to 27% in that demographic. On the campaign trail, DeSantis frequently brings up his kids to highlight policy concerns, particularly those related to education, or to highlight his ongoing spat with Disney, which he accuses of indoctrinating kids.
“My wife and I just believe that kids should be able to go to school, watch cartoons, and just be kids, without having some agenda shoved down their throats,” DeSantis stated during a visit to New Hampshire. Therefore, we take that seriously and have made a lot of efforts to support parents.
Conservative Republicans particularly like DeSantis’ attitude to family problems, which has drawn criticism from Democrats and civil rights activists. He has enacted laws that forbid abortions after six weeks, forbids minors from receiving care for gender transition, fine businesses that let kids see drag shows, and further restrict the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
DeSantis frequently attempt to mitigate the divisiveness of his political persona with stories about family life when campaigning.
To get her husband to talk about their children, Casey DeSantis generally coaxes him. She gets him to talk about their adventures taking the kids to a fast food joint that drunk college students frequent and having them baptized with water from the Sea of Galilee in Israel.
