These were created through a combination of humanity and renegade spiritual forces from various planes of dreams—the spirits are known as quori. Despite this, this race has always been considered wise, spiritual, and compassionate toward others. But there is something unmistakably alien about the Kalashtar, like their conflicting spirit and otherworldly nature.
These are the psionic conduits born from the two minds and one body, entangled with the spirits from the realm of dreams. Their voices can only be heard as dreams, though their psionic powers can be felt in the dreams they give. These bizarre, otherworldly spirits guide the kalashtar through the entire life.
They are telepaths, possess the strongest minds, and have actual power in the dream realm. Like the changelings from Eberron, Kalashtars are technically unique to that campaign setting, but these psionic powerhouses are becoming more and more common in 5e campaigns, too.
Who is the Kalashtar?
They were humans from Eberron who were entwined with spirits from the plane of dreams. While they appear human, they possess some psychic abilities because of their deep spiritual connection.
Although they cannot directly communicate with the spirits with whom they are linked, they experience them through emotions and instincts and dream of them. Due to their linked spirits, many Kalashtar are virtuous and lawful since they fled from the plane of dreams when evil spirits ruled there.
What is the Appearance of Kalashtar?
They appear to be more or less human. Their features are usually angular and tall, but they are generally pretty standard. They are primarily stoic and calm, and that matches their level-headed, unemotional nature. They aren’t indifferent, but several generations of monastic traditions are ingrained in their psyche.
Their otherworldly half emerges when they’re fully focused or emotionally involved. When they feel emotion, kalashtars’ eyes glow, and they seem to hold on to their quori spirit like a shadow or glimmer.
A quori spirit is a dream being that appears as anything they want, though they are attracted to creatures with many eyes and legs.
When designing characters, consider both the Kalashtar and their quori spirit. They are essentially one person with two personalities.
Find out how they often interact: are they cohesive or split? What motivates them? Are there any areas of disagreement? How was your Kalashtar raised? Did they grow up in a temple or on the streets without guidance?
Characteristics
- A +2 WIS and +1 CHA increase is odd since a build is unlikely to need both. They are intended for the spell-casters whose spell-casting modifier is WIS or CHA.
- Being medium-sized is not bad or good since most races are the same size.
- They walk 30 feet per second.
- Having an advantage on all WIS saving throws is an advantage! Anyone and any class can benefit from Dual Mind.
- There is not much psychic damage, but having the ability to resist it is exceedingly rare. The possibility of psychic spells throwing themselves at you at higher levels is relatively high so that Mental Discipline will be helpful at those times.
- It’s immaculate to telepathically communicate with creatures without needing to cast spells. Mind Link is handy despite two-way communication only being possible with one creature at a time, requiring an action to invoke. Initially, Mind Link’s range is limited and pretty much useless, but by the time it reaches 50+ feet, it becomes much more functional. It can be used to coordinate attacks and secretly give information to allies.
- It is very flavorful and on-brand when separated from Dreams. However, due to its situational nature, it is not an ideal tool for any campaign.
- You can give away the creature the ability to fully communicate with you telepathically until the start of your next turn when you speak telepathically to that whole creature. The creature must be at a distance of 60 feet from your location and must be hence able to see you to use this powerful ability.
- Glamour of the psychic. Pick one of the following skills: Persuasion, Insight, Intimidation, or Performance. When you use that skill, your ability checks are boosted.
Quick Overview on Their Names
Their names come in two halves, just like the other kalashtar. The prefix of their human half is the first half of a kalashtar name. A quori spirit dwells inside them, as indicated by the last half of their name. They tend to have 1-2 syllables in both parts of their names and are typically gender-neutral.
Orphaned Kalashtar and those who never mastered communicating with their spirit will have human names regardless of their upbringing.
Spirit names belonging to the Quori include Derra, Ghas, Nere, Ozen, Rai, Reilk, Reth, Shara, Tai, Tash, Ulad, Zon, and the Zoss.

Kalashtar works with which classes?
Mental Discipline, Dual Mind, and Mind Link benefit all classes. Outside of these racial traits, the Kalashtar is not an excellent choice for anyone looking to play hence a character relying on the WIS or CHA for spell-casting.
- Artificer: Artificers need INT to be successful.
- Barbarian: Barbarians are effective because of their STR.
- Bard: Due to the Kalashtar’s good racial traits, having +1 to CHA is acceptable.
- Cleric: Because of their racial traits, Clerics have an advantage over most other classes. With a Kalashtar Cleric, making WIS saving throws is very easy, allowing them to stay in battle and help their teammates.
- Druid: +2 WIS is yet perfect for the Druid class. The Kalashtar traits are passive, don’t require verbal components, and aren’t spells, so it will still work in beast form.
- Fighter: Kalashtar doesn’t have STR, DEX, or CON.
- Monk: Kalashtar’s traits give the Monk even more defensive options, thanks to WIS. You can make a great monk with the Kalashtar if you get enough DEX and CON.
- Paladin: Paladins need multiple abilities to succeed, so only having +1 CHA and not seeing STR, DEX, or CON will not be enough.
- Ranger: The WIS doesn’t affect the rangers much because they tend to do most of their damage with the weapons. STR or DEX is essential for the Rangers.
- Warlock: With the Kalashtar’s good racial traits, having only +1 CHA is fine.
- Wizard: Wizards require INT to be effective.
