Choosing a topic for your paper

Successful philosophy papers start with choosing the proper topic. Selecting an issue for your essay is a critical part of the writing process. A case for a philosophy paper that is too complex can make the writing process difficult and mess up the presentation of the content. On the other hand, an issue that is too easy will make it boring to read. Finally, make sure that you know your target audience to pick a topic that will interest them. Here are five (5) exciting topics you can use for your philosophical writing:

  1. Are evil people born or made?
  2. How does religion change a person?
  3. Love at first sight: True or False?
  4. What makes life meaningful?
  5. Does the supernatural exist?

Start with rough sketches of relevant ideas.

A lot of people will do anything to present their arguments. Whether through a debate, social media, or in writing. When you choose a topic you like, it seems like there are limitless arguments you can provide to aids its correctness. But of course, the audience can read so much until they get bored. It is vital to remember that you should only include points that are relevant to the topic. Making it unnecessarily long will not help you prove your points.

Even a narrative essays only consists of two to three paragraphs in the main body. For you to avoid getting in circles, it is helpful to outline. From there, you can narrow down the subtopics that you think will be substantial to the content of your paper. Do not worry about the details; in the beginning, it is good to see the overview of your content before you do serious research. This will help you save time and gather data more efficiently.

Begin by formulating your exact thesis

Philosophy PaperWhen you are choosing a book to read, you read the synopsis. You want to get an overview of the content. You want to set your expectation before reading the entire book. It is the same with writing essays. You formulate your thesis statement so that your readers will know what to expect from the content. The thesis statement is usually composed of two to three sentences in the latter part of the introduction. It gives the audience the main topic, the key points, and an overview of why it is correct. Writing a thesis can be complicated initially, but it will serve to avoid confusion and adequately prove your point.

Here is an example of a thesis statement on the topic of depression among teens “Because of false realities in social media, unreal standards and expectations are conditioned in the minds of teenagers that can cause them depression when they cannot imitate or achieve it.”

Explain the argument you will be critiquing.

You have to defend your argument on the particular issue you will be writing about in your essay. You cannot simply state your opinion is correct because other studies said it is accurate. You have to reason out why your arguments are factual. Aside from presenting backup claims from studies, you can include concrete examples on it.

You can narrate events; you make a story that will help you prove your point. It is also essential that you incorporate the philosophical teaching you are studying to better explain your arguments’ correctness. Look for philosophy essay examples and take note of how the writers present their arguments. You can use their style and technique in your paper if you have difficulty building your content.

Briefly conclude by explaining your argument.

The proper way on how to conclude your philosophy paper is by reviewing all your key points in the conclusion. Then, summarize and tell your audience how these concepts are interrelated. Having a solid conclusion is as vital as having your thesis statement. At the beginning of the paper, you present your argument, and in the end, you close by telling them why your case is correct.

You do not need an elaborate explanation because you already presented those ideas in your principal body. The conclusion is a reminder of your thoughts and how ultimately, it is correct. This part is your last chance to reason out the validity and correctness of your ideas—so use solid and simple words to convey your final points.

Be careful with specialized language.

Every field has its own set of jargon. Most students opt to use technical terms, thinking that they will sound smarter. If your paper’s target audience is the general public, it will be harder to prove your point if you use words that are not familiar to them. If you are writing for an exclusive group of knowledgeable and experts from the field, using technicalities will not be a problem. But being concise and straightforward is more achievable when you use simple words. The use of jargon is not entirely restricted, but there should be a balance when you include it in your essays.

Here are six helpful tips on how to write a philosophy paper. These guidelines should help you compose a quality piece of article. Continue to follow these tips until you can discover your strategy and develop your writing skill. The first step to improvement is to start writing. Then, have fun, learn and share through your philosophy essays.
