How to ensure that you retain your licenses in Utah?
Utah’s construction industry has general and specialized licensing requirements, but these licenses expire after a year if continuous learning is not maintained. Each license has its constant learning requirements. Here are the permits and the requirements to ensure you can continue working legally in the state.
General Building Contractor License (R100)
To either perform or assume the role as a superintendent on the construction of structures for the support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels, or movable property of any kind or any of the components of that construction a General Building Contractor License is required. This excludes plumbing, electrical work, mechanical work, work related to the operating integrity of an elevator, and manufactured housing installation.
In Utah, the license expires on November 30th of odd years. To renew, you must complete 6 hours of continuing education and submit your renewal to the State.
Residential & Small Commercial Contractor License (B100)
For the construction of single-family residences, multifamily residences – of up to four units, and commercial construction of no more than three stories aboveground and not more than 20,000 square feet, or any of the components of that construction, a Residential & Small Commercial Contractor license is required. This excludes plumbing, electrical work, mechanical work, and manufactured housing installation. The B100 includes the scope of the E100 classification, and the E100 consists of the scope of the B100 classification.

HVAC Contractors License
An S350 HVAC contractor license is required to legally install complete warm air heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems. As with all construction licenses in this region, the Business & Law exam must be passed.
In Utah, the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) requires HVAC Contractors to complete 6 hours of continuing education to renew their license. Renewals must be submitted to the board by November 30th of odd years.
Journeyman and Master Plumbing License
Utah has many licenses for contractors, including those for Building, Engineering, or Commercial work. The state also offers licenses for specific trades. Specific licenses are required for electricians, including the Journeyman and Master Utah Plumbing licenses.
16 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period before renewal. Utah has reciprocity agreements for Journeyman with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Oregon. They have reciprocity at the Master level for Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming.
Plumbing Contractor License in Utah
A Journeyman and Master Plumber in Utah is licensed to engage in the plumbing trade, which is limited to the plumbing of buildings.
12 hours of continuing education is required each licensing period before renewal. Utah has no reciprocity agreements with any other state.
