Ross Tartan: A Look into Clan History and its Scottish Kilt Tradition

Exploring the Ross Clan Heritage

The first recorded chief of the Ross family was Fearcher Mac a t-Sagirt (“Priest’s Son”) in 1234 and he became Ross’ first Earl, recognized by King Alexander II of Scotland. This marked the beginning of the Ross family’s connection to the Tartan Fabric.

The Ross family is known for their bravery and loyalty, as they fought for Robert the Bruce during the Scottish Independence War, but supported the state forces during the 18th-century revolt of Jacobites. They also had a bloody conflict with the MacKay faction in the 15th century. The family motto, “Spem successes alit” (Success gives hope), and the clan crest, a hand holding laurel flowers, represent the strong spirit of the Ross family. The name Ross comes from the old Celtic word “ros,” meaning promontory of land, which fittingly describes the long narrow strip of land separating Moray Firth and Dornoch Firth in northeast Scotland.

Most of the largest Ross settlements were located on or near the east coast, including Dingwall, the headquarters of the Ross family and former regional town, as well as the small areas of Cromarty, Fortrose, and Tain where the family had significant influence. These lands were originally part of Macbeth’s Moray empire but were later granted to Malcolm Macbeth by King Malcolm IV, who ruled from 1153 to 1165. However, when Malcolm died and was succeeded by King William the Lion, MacHeth rebelled and was stripped of his territories. King Alexander II, who succeeded King William I in 1214, was faced with a northern revolt and received support from Clan Ross chief Fearcher Mac a t-Sagairt, who traced his ancestry to the Irish royal house of O’Beolains and was the custodian of the Abbey of Applecross, founded by St. Yeirubha in 673.
King Alexander officially made Ross’s Earl in 1234, in recognition of the help he received from Fearcher. Today, only a few carved stones from the Abbey of Applecross remain, preserved in the 19th-century church. Earl Ross first’s religious identity can be seen through the establishment of another abbey in the village of Fearn, located between Nigg and Tarbat Ness. The original abbey temple was severely damaged in 1742 when heavy snowfall caused the roof to collapse and 44 worshipers, including several members of the Ross Clan, were killed.
The family was also known as Clan An dries, associated with the followers of Scottish patron saint St. Andrew. Earl Ross’ son, William, took office after his father and was captured and abducted just before his appointment. He was rescued with the help of Clan Munroe, who were awarded land titles and have since become strong allies of Clan Ross.
