Gilgo Beach Authorities in New York have indicted architect Rex Heuermann on murder charges concerning three of the island’s eleven cold cases.

What got people on Long Island, New York, on edge was a succession of brutal, unsolved murders that made national headlines.

On Friday, U.S. authorities said they had charged a suspect with at least three murders, perhaps shedding light on the case.

Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect from Nassau County, has been charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello.

In a fourth case of homicide, that of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, he is still considered a suspect. Beside a seaside roadway in 2010, she was discovered bound and hiding in the bushes.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison called Rex Heuermann “a devil that walks among us – a predator that wrecked families.” “If it weren’t for the people on our team, he’d still be walking the streets today.”

Yet Michael Brown, Heuermann’s defence attorney, claims his client stated, “I didn’t do this.” Heuermann’s attorney has pleaded not guilty on his behalf.

Suffolk County Judge Richard Ambro ruled that Heuermann should be jailed without bail due to the “extreme depravity” of the case.

In May 2010, after 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert made frantic contact with emergency services, the investigation into her Gilgo Beach disappearance began.

She may be heard saying in the audio that she was leaving a house in Oak Beach, Long Island, where she had been employed for sexual labour and saying, “There’s somebody pursuing me.”

Her disappearance caused the authorities to begin a search that continued for several months. Yet in December of that year, on a remote beach along the south side of Long Island, a law enforcement officer discovered a set of remains that turned out to be Barthelemy’s.

Over the following several days, other bodies, including those of Costello, Brainard-Barnes, and Waterman, were found. The ladies were all in their 20s at the time and had all worked in the sex industry at some point in their lives. Their bodies were discovered wrapped in a camouflage-patterned fabric that resembled burlap.

As 2011 progressed, the hunt for the missing persons led to the discovery of an additional 11 bodies, including four women, one guy, and a little child. The police have stated that they strongly suspect that more than one person is responsible.

Investigators said that Heuermann lived in a neighbourhood called Massapequa Park, which is located just across the water from the Gilgo Beach location where the murder took place.

In March of 2022, investigators found out that he had previously possessed a Chevrolet Avalanche pick-up truck comparable to the model a witness had identified as being around the time of the disappearances. This led them to look into him as a possible suspect.

Later on in the same month, a surveillance crew followed Heuermann around Manhattan as he tossed away some pizza crust that he had leftover from earlier. After that, Gilgo Beach the detectives took the crust and swabbed it for DNA; the results matched the suspect to hair found among the victims’ remains.

Heuermann was taken into custody by the police late on Thursday night, and by dawn on Friday, investigators were searching his modest red house on Long Island.

On Friday, the district attorney for Suffolk County, Ray Tierney, informed reporters that Heuermann had “searched obsessively” for information regarding the crimes at Gilgo Beach online.

Tierney claimed that the architect made use of burner phones to communicate with sex workers up until the time of his arrest. He further mentioned that Heuermann supposedly possessed licences for 92 different firearms.
